NACOGDOCHES, Texas - UT Arlington swept the Lamar Cardinals Thursday morning 4-0 in Nacogdoches in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament.
"We had a tough first round match," UT Arlington heado coach Diego Benitez said. "Lamar has a solid lineup and compete hard in every position.
"We played great tennis in singles and doubles and we need to be ready for another tough match tomorrow."
The Mavericks (15-8) jumped ahead early when they took the doubles points. No. 1 doubles and senior duo Maria Martinez-Romero and Nikola Matovicova defeated Lamar’s Carolina Salas and Alicia Porte 8-4. Giada D’ortona and Natalia Mayuk also took down their Lamar foe 8-5 at the No. 2 doubles position.
Freshman Verena Scott completed her singles completion first for the Mavericks after a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Alicia Porte at the No. 2 position.
“I was pretty nervous before the match, but I am really happy we won,” Scott said about her first collegiate conference tournament. “I think everyone did really well and we are looking forward to our next match tomorrow.”
Natalia Mayuk won her match at straight sets 6-0, 7-5 against Lamar’s No. 3 Carolina Maso. Senior Nikola Matovicova completed the first round of the conference tournament for the Mavericks when she took down her opponent 6-2, 6-3.
The Mavericks are back on the court Friday as they take on the No. 7 seed Sam Houston State (12-8) for the semifinals at 2 p.m. at the Schlief Tennis Complex in Nacogdoches.
