NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The UT Arlington women’s tennis team advances to the Southland Conference Championship after defeating Sam Houston State at Schlief Tennis Complex 4-0.
"It was a really tough match," UT Arlington head coach Diego Benitez said. "Sam Houston is a fiesty team, but we played awesome tennis for the second day in a row.
"We just need to continue the momentum and be ready for another great match tomorrow."
Southland Conference women’s tennis Player of the Year Maria Martinez-Romero and partner Nikola Matovicova started the day with a 8-4 victory over the Bearkats’ Tatyana Postnikova and Nadia Dubyanskaya. No. 3 doubles Verena Scott and Christine Foote also defeated their Sam Houston State opponent 8-5.
UT Arlington went into singles up 1-0 and the women continued their success. Martinez-Romero defeated Imke Jagau in a quick 6-1, 6-2 match. Freshman Verena Scoot also completed singles play with a victory after beating Sheridan Currie 6-3, 6-2.
The second-team all-conference senior Natalia Mayuk took down Natalie Petaia after winning both her sets 6-3, 6-1.
The Mavericks will compete in the 2012 Southland Conference Women’s Tennis Championship Saturday in Nacogdoches at 2 p.m.
