The UT Arlington women's tennis team captured their sixth Southland Conference tournament title against last year's defending champion Northwestern State with a score of 4-2 on Sunday in San Antonio, Texas.
The Mavericks improved to 20-4 on the year and earned the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Regional. The Lady Demons wrapped up their season with an 18-6 overall record.
"Today's win was a big exclamation point to wrap up SLC play capturing the tournament," said head coach Diego Benitez. "I have no words to describe how proud I feel for our girls. They never looked back and kept fighting for the objectives."
"Northwestern State was a tough rival and today they were the defending champion and were up for a big match. We are looking forward to regionals," said Benitez.
The Mavericks dropped the doubles point but came back strong in singles action to win the match. SLC Freshman of the Year Linda Aqvist's singles match was the one that clinched the victory for UT Arlington. The win improved the freshman's record to 16-5 on the season.
UTA opened the match with doubles action where they fell in two of the three doubles flights. Daiana Negreanu and Linda Aqvist were the lone Mavericks to record a win. The duo posted an 8-3 decision over Olga Bazhanova and Adna Curukovic in the top flight.
Giada D'ortona and Natalia Mayuk followed with an 8-3 loss to Kathrin Lange and Bianca Schulz in the No. 3 spot while Maria Martinez-Romero and Nikola Matovicova suffered an 8-6 loss to Martina Rubesova and Andrea Nedorostova in the No. 2 position.
With UTA trailing 1-0 heading into singles action, the team regrouped and prepared for singles competition and posted four huge victories.
Freshman D'ortona put UT Arlington on the board after winning a 6-0, 6-3 decision against Nedorostova in the No. 6 position. SLC Newcomer of the Year Mayuk followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Schulz in the No. 4 flight, making the score 2-1.
Northwestern State's Lange tied the score at 2-2 after recording a 6-3, 6-3 win against Katarina Mlcochova in the No. 5 position. The score wasn't tied up for long as Martinez-Romero handed Rubesova a 7-5, 7-5 setback in the No. 3 flight. The junior improved her record to 22-1.
Aqvist sealed the win for the Mavericks in the No.2 flight as she posted a hard fought 6-4, 5-7, and 6-2 win over Curukovic. Negreanu's match went unfinished after Aqvist clinched the win for the Mavericks.
The No. 69 Mavericks continue their season and will wait to see who they will face in the first round of the NCAA Regional tournament.
