HOUSTON, Texas - The UT Arlinton women's tennis team wrapped up play at the Rice Invitational on Saturday in a rain shortened event at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
"Angeles played a very physical match against rice," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "it was a great performance after being down 5-2. This was a great job from the women's team and we got some nice wins under our belt."
Giada D'ortona highlighted the Mavericks' weekend with a consolation bracket win in the fourth flight of action. Falling in her opening match 6-4, 6-2, D'ortona was victorious in her next two matches 6-3, 6-2 and 7-5, 6-2 with wins over opponents from Tarleton State and McNeese State.
Jessica Birowski won her flight 5 opening match 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 over an opponent from McNeese State, but lost to Tarleton State 6-2, 6-2. Birowski would win her consolation match 6-4, 6-2.
Angeles de los Rios combined with Astrid Gehre to win in the opening round of the flight 1 doubles draw. The team paired up to defeat a duo from McNeese State 8-3. However, Angeles and Gehre would be prevented from advancing further by Mother Nature.
