DALLAS – While the weekend did not provide an individual title, UTA women's tennis was able to find positives at Metroplex Mania hosted by SMU from Friday through Sunday.
Facing tough competition that included Texas A&M, Arizona and SBC rival Georgia State, UTA had two individuals advance into the consolation final to join Klara Mrcela's run through Draw 5. Mrcela picked up wins over Northwestern State and Abilene Christian before she fell in the finale 6-1, 6-2.
"We played some good tennis this weekend against some good competition," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "The SMU tournament is always tough and filled with talent to play against. Our younger girls continued to play well and have momentum going into the end of the fall season.
Champions of tournaments earlier this fall, Nanaka Takeuchi and Lucia Natal each fell for the first time in the opening round. However, they'd both bounce back with victories in the consolation bracket to reach their respective finals.
The ladies conclude the fall schedule at the ITA Texas Regional beginning on Oct. 13. The competition is hosted by TCU.
