NEW YORK, N.Y. - The UT Arlington women's tennis team reached three finals at the 2013 USTA BJK NTC Women's College Invitational at the USTA National Tennis Center over the weekend.
The Mavericks, competiting at the home of the U.S. Open at Flushing Meadows, had success across the board.
"It was great play from all of our girls," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "I am very proud of Giada D'ortona to capture the single title and Angeles de los Rios to reach the finals in both singles and doubles. It was a great experience for all of us to be able to play at the best venue in the world."
D'ortona highlighted UTA's weekend of competition as she claimed the Draw F singles title. D'ortona went 4-0 through the competition and reached the final by defeating Olivia Hogan of Providence (6-0, 6-2), Madison Shoemaker of Seton Hall (6-4, 6-3) and Nicolin Luecke of CSUniv (6-4, 6-1).
D'ortona went through the draw as the top seed and faced off against the second seed, Hannah Morril of Harvard in the final. She would win in four sets by claiming the crown in a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6, 10-7 win.
De los Rios would also reach the final of her respective draw, the C draw. De los Rios defeated Rocio Portela of Seton Hall 6-3, 6-2, Mikola Cooper from Charleston Southern 6-4, 6-3 and reach the final by defeating second-seed Ioana Alecsiu from Columbia 6-3, 7-7 (3), 11-9.
In the final, de los Rios fell 7-5, 6-2 to top-seed June Lee of Harvard.
"I feel like we were known among these teams going in, but now we will be remembered," Benitez said.
De los Rios teamed up with Astrid Gehre to reach the doubles final of the second draw. The duo defeated a team from Rutgers 9-7 in the opening round, a pair from Charleston Southern 8-6 and earned a place in the final with an 8-6 win over a team from Providence.
De los Rios and Gehre fell in the final 8-4.
In other action, Elizabeh Thoms advanced out of the opening round with a 6-1, 6-2 win in Draw A, falling in the second to second-seeded Sivan Krems of Princeton. Christine Foote, experience the same success in the H Draw, defeated Alexandra Landert 6-2, 6-2 in the opener before fallling in the quarterfinals.
D'Ortona and Jessica Birowski advance to the semifinals in the third draw with a 8-4 win over Deleware and an 8-3 win over NJIT.
The women will be back in action in Fort Worth on Thursday in the Regional Tournament.
