ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington women's tennis begins its 2014 campaign Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center & Bartzen Varsity Courts as the Mavericks take on TCU.
"We're excited," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "We've put together a great group. We're really young with four freshmen, but we're really optimistic about our chances this season."
The crosstown rivals met last season in Arlington, as the then-No. 19 Frogs defeated the Mavericks 4-2 at the UTA Tennis Center. The Frogs enter the season ranked No. 30.
UT Arlington welcomes back four returners in Giada D'ortona, Elizabeth Thoms, Christine Foote and Verena Scott from last season and adds four freshman to the squad. Jessica Birowski, Angeles de los Rios, Astrid Gehre and Ekaterina Tugarinova all competed with for the Mavs during the fall season and are expected to make an impact.
Thoms returns as a sophomore after an overall 14-1 record and going 8-1 in the Western Athletic Conference play last season.
