Arlington, Texas - UT Arlington senior Maria Martinez-Romero has been named the Southland Conference women's tennis player of the week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Martinez-Romero, a native of Nules, Spain (ITF Junior Circuit), opened the season with a 2-0 record in doubles play and a 1-1 record in singles, both at the No. 1 position. Martinez-Romero and doubles partner Nikola Matovicova defeated No. 75 Wyoming's 44th-ranked doubles team 8-2 on Saturday before taking a 8-4 decision over No. 78 Central Florida on Sunday.
In singles play, Martinez-Romero defeated Central Florida's Genevieve Lorbergs 6-4, 6-3. For the week, Martinez-Romero helped the Mavericks to a season-opening 1-1 record.
Honorable mention this week goes to Lamar junior Alessandra Pennesi and Stephen F. Austin senior Alina Shazhko. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland men's tennis sports information directors.
Each school's SID nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.
