ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington tennis has a busy schedule to get the 2018 schedule going with seven matches between Friday and Feb. 7, five taking place at the UTA Tennis Center.
The Maverick women get action started in their season at 11 a.m. on Friday when they host UT Rio Grande Valley in the team's season opener. UTA will then travel to Wichita, Kan. for matches against UMKC (Saturday) and Wichita State (Sunday) before welcoming Texas A&M Corpus Christi for a men's and women's doubleheader on Feb. 7. The men, falling to Harvard in the season opener played in Dallas last week, take on Seminole State and Cameron on Saturday before also taking on the Islanders next week.
"It is going to be great to play at home," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "It is always a great opportunity to get the season started here. The girls take on UTRGV and then the men have a doubleheader on Saturday. We have a very young team but the guys and gals are all very excited. The girls are just ready to play a match."
With both teams bringing in young lineups, doubles play is even more crucial this season as UTA is still trying to figure out its depth in singles, as well as who will be playing together in the battle for the opening point.
"Doubles is tough," Benitez said. "They are short sets and it is so important to start strong. The warmup is super important for us to make sure we are ready and have the right pairs. They have to make sure they are ready to go. It is tough because if you get a break early in your favor you have that to work with. We are still narrowing the pairings and we will still mixup a few of the pairings over the next few weeks."
Senior Agustina Serio and sophomore Anna Wichert return as ranked players nationally after a trip to the NCAA Doubles Tournament in 2017, however, with the young lineup behind them, Benitez is still trying to figure what the lineup will be.
