No. 75 TEXAS-ARLINGTON OPENS SEASON WITH 6-1 LOSS AT No. 26 TULANE

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The University of Texas at Arlington women's tennis team opened the 2004 campaign with a 6-1 loss at Tulane Saturday afternoon. Tulane improved to 2-0 while Texas-Arlington is 0-1.
The Green Wave took an early 1-0 lead after sweeping doubles play. Tulane's ninth-ranked team of Jenny Kuhn and Julie Smekodub posted and 8-5 win over the Lady Mavericks 40th-ranked team of Marketa Cizova and Daniela Novakova at No. 1 doubles. The Green Wave recorded an upset at No. 2 doubles as Nancy Kockott and Dori Magas topped the 50th-ranked team of Monika Peciulionyte and Simri van Rooyen, 8-4. Tulane closed out doubles action with an 8-2 win at No. 3 as Darya Ivanov and Ana Saaibi defeated UTA's Jitka Vetrovcova and Anete Rozkalne.
UTA's Peciulionyte, ranked No. 46 in the ITA singles poll, recorded a 4-6, 6-3, (10-5) upset victory over No. 10 Julie Smekodub at the No. 1 position. Peciulionyte, already the highest ranked singles player in UTA women's tennis history, continues to break into the UTA record books as she is now the first women's tennis player to defeat an opponent ranked in the top ten nationally.
In other singles action, UTA's Cizova won her first set against No. 47 M. Ivanov, but couldn't manage the upset as she fell in the No. 2 spot, 6-1, 5-7, (10-8). Tulane's Kuhn earned a straight set victory over Rozkalne, 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 3 position. UTA's Novakova dropped a 6-4, 6-0 decision to Magas at No. 4 singles, while fellow Lady Maverick Van Rooyen dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision at the No. 5 position. The Green Wave added another victory at No. 6 singles as Saaibi defeated Vetrovcova, 6-0, 6-4.
Texas-Arlington will return to action Feb. 6 at Houston. First serve for Friday's match against the Cougars is set for 2 p.m.
