San Diego, Calif. - In a match that took four hours to complete at the Barnes Tennis Collegiate Invitational, the UT Arlington women's tennis squad dropped a hard-fought 4-3 decision to University of New Mexico on Thursday, March 20 at the Barnes Tennis Center. The setback fell to 8-5 overall while UNM improved to 4-9 on the 2009 season.
UTA opened their second match of the tournament against UNM where they recorded the doubles point but struggled in singles play, losing four of six matches to the Lobos.
Junior Klara Jagosova and newcomer Daiana Negreanu suffered an 8-2 setback to Ola Abou-Zekry and Emma Hayman in the No. 1 position while Nikola Matovivoa and Maria Martinez-Romer posted an 8-3 win over Anye Villanueva-Forte in the No. 2 spot in the rotation.
In singles action, Hadvigerova lost her match to Abou-Zekry by scores of 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 1 spot while White handed Jagosova a 6-1, 6-1 loss in the No. 2 position.
Negreanu suffered a three-set setback by scores of 7-5, 3-6 and 6-1 agaisnt Hayman in the No. 3 spot while Mlcochova lost a 6-0, 6-3 decision to Victoria Tessmar in the No. 4 position in the rotation.
Newcomers Martinez-Romer and Matovivoa where the only two Mavericks to collect wins in singles action.
Martinez-Romer handed Maria Sotirchos a 6-2, 6-3 loss in the No. 5 spot while Matovivoa recorded a 6-0, 6-4 victory against Elaine Bourdages in the No. 6 position.
The Mavs continue tournament action tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. when they face New Mexico State in the consolation bracket.
