ARLINGTON, Texas — The UT Arlington women’s tennis team defeated Western Athletic opponenet New Mexico State 4-0 Friday, April 5 at the UTA Tennis Center.
“We played very good doubles,” UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. “It was close, but at the end we kept doing fundamentals and got the points.”
The Mavericks began the day by winning the doubles point, which allowed them to go into singles up 1-0 over the Aggies.
“We had a similar scenario in singles and I am happy for Elizabeth Thoms, who clinched to win the match,” Benitez said.
Senior Giada D’Ortona, who recently made her way to the No. 2 position, won her singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 victory.
Verena Scott also won her singles point with a 6-2, 6-1 win over her Aggie opponent and Thoms clinched the match for the Maverick.
With the win the Mavericks improve to 5-10 overall and 4-2 in the WAC.
UT Arlington is back on the court Saturday, April 6 to face Louisiana Tech and UTSA starting at 11 a.m.
