Men's Tennis Notes

The UT Arlington men's tennis team finished the 2009 regular season with a 9-12 overall record and a 3-3 SLC mark.

The Mavericks are mading their 13th tournament appearance as the number-four seed.

A combined 30 of the Mavericks 56 singles victories came from the four highly recruited freshmen in Mindaugas Celedinas, Jason Lateko, Adam Srkala and David Subirats.

Celedinas was named the 2009 Freshman of the Year and collected second team All-SLC honors while Gonzalo Bienzobas earned first team All-SLC accolades. Subirats joined Celedinas on the All-SLC second team.

Newcomer Mindaugas Celedinas stepped into the No.1 single's position with ease, recording an 11-8 mark and 4-2 record in league play. Celedinas was named SLC Player of the Week on Feb. 10 after he collected a three-set victory over Vinay Kamineni of nationally-ranked University of New Orleans.

Dmitry Minkin and Celedinas were a forced to be reckoned with at the No. 1 spot as the duo posted victories against No. 75 University of New Orleans and No. 7 Baylor. Together the tandem began the season with a 6-0 record and ended the season clinching three of five conference matches.

UTA posted conference wins over Lamar (4-3), UT Pan American (5-2) and Nicholls State (4-0).

Women's Tennis Notes

UTA finished the regular season with a 14-6 record and a perfect 11-0 record.

The Mavericks open the SLC Tournament in Corpus Christi, TX as the No. 1 seed.

The Mavs take on the No. 8 seed-Stephen F. Austin (4-7) in the first round on Friday at the HEB Tennis Courts.

In the regular season, UTA defeated the Lady Jacks, 7-0 in Nacogdoches, TX.

Freshmen's Nikola Matovivoa, Katarina Mlcochova and Maria Martinez-Romer earned All-SLC honors.

Third year head coach Diego Benitez was named the Women's Southland Conference Coach of the Year. Benitez guided the Mavericks to their seventh SLC title in school history.

Martinez-Romer shined all season for the Mavericks, finishing the regular season with an 18-2 singles record and 12-5 doubles mark with teammate Nikola Matovicova. The newcomer went undefeated in conference play and won 16 straight singles and six doubles matches.

Matovivoa also went undefeated with an 11-0 record in league play, including a 6-0 mark at the No. 6 position.
