DENVER, Colo. -- Three Mavericks from the men’s and women’s tennis squads have earned All-WAC honors for the 2013 season, the Western Athletic Conference office announced Friday.
Freshman Elizabeth Thoms has been named First Team All-WAC Singles at the No. 4 position. Thoms completed the season winning eight of her 10 matches played in this spot in the lineup.
"I feel very honored to receive this award,” Thoms said. “I had no idea there was such an award so it was really unexpected, which made it extra special. I am very happy and feel very privileged that I could represent UTA.”
The women’s team went into the conference tournament as the No. 4 seed with an overall record of 7-12 and a league mark of 6-3.
On the men’s side, freshman Carlos Arbiza and senior Yauheni Yakauleu paired up for doubles competition for most of the season earning them Second Team All-WAC doubles. The duo was 8-6 overall and picked up an impressive 7-3 record playing at the No. 2 doubles position.
The men (7-11, 1-5) qualified for the conference tournament sitting as the last seed.
