WT: Gehre/Wichert earn NCAA Tournament selection

May 3, 2017

The Sun Belt's first-team All-Conference tandem of senior Astrid Gehre and freshman Anna Wichert were selected as the league's automatic qualifier to the 2017 NCAA Doubles Championship announced on Wednesday. The tournament will be held on May 24-29 by the University of Georgia.

"I am so proud of Anna and Astrid, they are truly an amazing doubles team," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "They had a tremendous season with so many great victories. It was an amazing and an incredible record with just a couple of losses. They contributed to a lot of doubles points with their high qualify of playing. We are very fortunate to have them representing UTA.

"We are honored to have a senior like Astrid in a combination with a freshman like Anna to be the representives of not only UTA, but the Sun Belt. Hopefully we can go to the national tournament and make a major impact this time."

Gehre and Wichert had an impressive doubles record of 18-2 and reached as high as No. 72 in the ITA/Oracle Collegiate Rankings after winning their first 18 matches. The 90 percent winning percentage for the season is tied for the all-time best in Maverick history, while Gehre's 78 doubles wins are second all-time for the program.

The selection is the second in three years for the program. Senior Angeles de los Rios and former Mav Elizabeth Thoms earned the honor in the 2015 season and battled the eventual champions from Alabama in the first round in a match that was closest for the Crimson Tide going into the final.

All matches shall be the best-of-three sets. No-ad scoring and a seven-point tiebreaker (first to seven points, must win by two points) at six-games-all will be used for all matches. In doubles, a 10-point match tiebreaker will be played in lieu of a third set.

Automatic qualification into the Division I doubles championship is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible doubles teams ranked in the ITA Top 60 for eligible/entered doubles teams. For conferences with more than one doubles team within the ITA Top 60 eligible/entered doubles teams, the subcommittee applies the NCAA selection criteria to determine which doubles team is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All doubles teams must have started a minimum of 10 doubles matches, eight must be completed, with four of the eight matches completed in the spring, in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.
