Waco, Texas - Capturing a NCAA Tournament first round victory is something that has never been done by a Southland Conference team and is still yet to be done as the UT Arlington women's tennis squad dropped a hard-fought 4-0 setback to No. 4 Baylor at the Baylor Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.
UTA finishes its season with a 17-7 overall mark while Baylor improves to 24-4 on the season.
The Mavericks entered Saturday's match with their work cut out for them as they faced four nationally-ranked players.
UT Arlington quickly fell behind 1-0 after dropping all three doubles matches to the Bears. In the No. 2 position, Nikola Matovicova and Maria Martinez-Romer were the first to finish their match as they suffered an 8-1 loss to No. 65 Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk. ,p> Klara Jagosova and Daiana Negreanu lost the top flight to No. 13 Csilla Borsanyi and Lenka Broosova with a final score of 8-2. The third flight with duo Monika Hadvigerova and Katarina Mlcochova went unfinished.
Trailing 1-0 heading into singles play, the Mavs dropped the No. 2, 3, and 4 matches while the No. 1 and 6 flights went unfinished.
Negreanu lost the No. 2 match to No. 33 Broosova, 6-1, 6-0 while No. 44 Stanivuk handed Jagosova a 6-3, 6-1 loss in the No. 3 position. Mlcochova dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision against No. 70 Borsanyi in the fourth flight.
Hadvigerova, Martinez-Romer and Matovicova's flights all went unfinished.
Baylor advances to the second round of the NCAA Championships and will face No. 23 SMU on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. The Mustangs defeated No. 39 Texas A&M, 4-1, in the first match of the day.
