AUSTIN, Texas - A slow start in doubles play was too much to overcome as the UTA women's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decisinio to 12th-ranked Texas in first round play on the NCAA regionals at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center on the UT Campus Saturday.

Texas (23-5) did not drop a set against the UTA Lady Mavericks, which finish the season at 18-7. Texas advances to Sunday's NCAA second round action, also at Penick-Allison Tennis Center to face Arizona State (7-14). ASU pulled off a 4-1 upset win over No. 19 ranked LSU in Saturday's other first round match in Austin.

Sunday's winner advances to next week's round of 16 at the NCAA National Championships in Athens, Georgia, where the NCAA team championships take place May 20-23, followed by the NCAA individual singles and doubles championships (May 23-29).

The Longhorns were led by sophomores Mia Marovic (Split, Croatia) and Kelly Baritot (Allison Park, Pa.) who both won singles matches and also earned victories at their respective doubles positions.

Texas won the doubles point against UTA in quick fashion, posting wins at second and third doubles. The No. 2 duo from Split, Croatia of freshman Petra Dizdar and Mia Marovic defeated the freshmen duo of Monika Peciulionyte and Simri van Rooyen, 8-3 in pro sets. At third doubles, sophomore Kelly Baritot (Allison Park, Pa.) and freshman Ristine Olson (Missoula, Mont.) upended sophomore Anete Rozkalne and senior Jitka Vetrovcova, 8-4.

"Today's match belonged to Texas," siad UTA head coach Christian Wassmer. "They were the better team out these and they have a strong team. However, I am pleased with my group of players We have had three freshmen carry us all year long, and they played at the number one, three and four singles positions. They've been a pleasant surprise, and they've rally helped us. Matches like this are dissappointing, and it is difficult to always have the freshmen expected to lead you, especially at this time of year."

The Longhorns clinched the match with three straight wins in singles at Nos. 2, 3 and 5. Posting wins for UT were Marovic, a 6-1, 6-2 victor over Novakova, followed by sophomore Katie Ruckert (Vienna, Va.) who won her match at No. 2 with a 7-5, 6-1 win against Marketa Cizova.

Kelly Baritot clinched the 4-0 win with her straight set victory over Rozkalne, 6-1, 6-1.

Due to the 4-0 edge, the singles matches at Nos. 1, 4 and 6 were not completed.
