NCAA Doubles Bracket
ATHENS, Ga. - Senior Astrid Gehre and freshman Anna Wichert are set for a first-round matchup on Thursday against Texas A&M's No. 7-ranked pair of Rachel Pierson and Rutuja Bhosale in the Round of 32 at the 2017 NCAA Doubles Championship hosted by the University of Georgia.
The duo were recognized by the Sun Belt as the league's automatic qualifier after finishing the season with an 18-2 record and were named All-Conference first team.
"We are excited about the match tomorrow," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "It is going to be a great a great atmosphere here in Athens. The girls are so excited and are really looking forward to the match. We are going to play a team in Texas A&M that is in our region. We feel that we have a good draw and will take as much as we can from this experience and are just happy to represent the University and the Sun Belt Conference."
Gehre is second in UTA's record books for all-time doubles wins with 78 over her four-year career and features a .650 winning percentage (78-42).
The matchup will be the first for the tandem against Texas A&M this season in doubles, while Gehre faced off against Tina Bokhua, No. 12 in the Texas Region, in singles in a close three-set loss in the ITA Division I Texas Regional in October.
UTA's doubles tandem is the second squad in the last three years to earn a spot in the NCAA Doubles Tournament. Senior Angeles de los Rios joined with former Mav Elizabeth Thoms in the 2015 edition, falling to the top-seeded team in the opener.
