ARLINGTON, Texas - It's a new-look squad taking the court in 2017-18 as five newcomers make up a roster of eight for UTA women's tennis. The Mavericks open the fall tournament season on Sept. 15 in Midland at the 2017 Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational, a staple in the UTA fall season each year.
Two of the three returners have vast experience at the highest level and are on pace for record-breaking careers for UTA. Agustina Serio enters her senior season with 61 career singles wins and 58 doubles wins, both on pace to approach all-time marks in Maverick history. Sophomore Anna Wichert is coming off an appearance in the NCAA Doubles Championship with former Mav Astrid Gehre.
For Serio, the focus on the fall is on getting the team together and learning about what they have to offer with the newcomers on the roster.
"We have a lot of freshmen, we will have to be together, strong like we always are and try our best and we will be fine," Serio said. "My personal goals are to compete for a Sun Belt Championship this year and of course getting better until the end."
Serio's career winning percentage of .744 in singles is currently second in UTA's record books, trailing Maria Martinez-Romer's 2008-12 career of .765. Overall, she is just two singles wins away from entering the all-time top 10, and is in a chase for Marketa Cizova's all-time record of 91. On the doubles side, she is just one victory short of tying Giada D'ortona's 59 to enter the top 10.
Looking to move up the lineup this season, junior Carla Cerdan Vives adds to the group as a returner with experience. The Iguadala, Spain native was 10-14 in singles, but 8-7 in dual match play last season, playing primarily at the No. 6 spot.
Joining the trio, five freshmen will be making their collegiate debuts over the course of the fall, with tournament rosters pending. Momoka Horiquchi and Nanaka Takeuchi join from Japan, while Klara Mrcela (Croatia) and Lucia Natal (Spain) join from Europe. Almudena Boza joins from Puru.
