ARLINGTON, Texas - Coming off a NCAA Doubles Championship appearance, sophomore Anna Wichert joined with senior Agustina Serio in the ITA/Oracle Division I Preseason Doubles Rankings at No. 41, the highest ranking in the Sun Belt Conference.
Wichert played with former Maverick Astrid Gehre and spent much of the season in the ITA rankings after winning the first 18 matches of the year, eventually earning an at-large selection to the 2017 NCAA Championships.
"It is very motivating for the team to have a team ranked so high in the preseason," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "We rarely have anyone ranked in the preseason and usually have to do it the hard way. To be recognized, especially with Anna going to the national tournament and Agustina playing at the level she has been for us, they deserve it and their games really compliment each other. They will be really great leaders for us on the doubles side this season.
The ranking is sixth-highest amongst mid-major teams and comes in at fifth in Texas, behind squads from Texas Tech, TCU and North Texas.
Heading into the fall opener in Midland, Texas on Friday, Serio has a chance to move into the Top-10 in UTA's all-time rankings. With just two wins in singles, Serio will tie Marketa Cizova's 91 career victories for 10th. In doubles, one win would tie her for Giada D'ortona's 59, also 10th best in Maverick history.
Wichert had a stellar freshman campaign where she was 19-4 in doubles play, starting the dual match play season 18-0. In singles she was 15-6, a mark that is only behind Serio for highest winning percentage on the squad in 2017.
