ARLINGTON, Texas -- Fresh off the opening weekend that saw individual success, UTA heads to the Rice Invitational where three more newcomers will make their Maverick debut.
Nanaka Takeuchi claimed the Flight 2 title at last weekend's Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas and coach Diego Benitez is already expecting big things from the group that will take the court beginning on Friday in Houston.
"I was so excited for Nanaka, as a freshman she has just climatized to everything and being able to get that many wins in a row was amazing for her and for the entire time," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "She felt the support of the entire team that was with her there. Now they know that we can do big things semester, and this semester is to get individual rankings. So having someone win the opening tournament we played should be a good indication with how good this team could be."
With the set of newcomers being the focus of the team, Benitez said that the coaching style hasn't changed despite the fresh talent.
"The coaching style hasn't changed per say, we are always trying to motivate the players within themselves and find the right buttons to push," Benitez said. "That is pretty much the staff that we have in a nutshell. What does changes is just the drills that we do. A lot of the girls have to get used to doubles and the strategies and plays that we do."
