SARA PESIC AND ITZEL MANZANERA CAPTURE RICE DOUBLES TITLE

Arlington, Texas - Senior Sara Pesic and newcomer Itzel Manzanera led the women's tennis team at the 2008 Holiday Inn Astrodome Rice Classic with a doubles' championship title on Saturday at the Jake Hess Stadium.

In the flight four doubles' competition, Pesic and Manzanera dominated their opponents, capturing three victories and the tournament title.

In round one, the duo collected an 8-6 victory over Rebecca Kirven and Jessica Diamond of Samford. With their first win under their belts, Pesic and Manzanera continued the winning streak with an 8-3 victory against UTSA's Eva Silvester and Katie Ottenbreit.

On Saturday, the tandem entered Jake Hess Stadium on a mission to leave with a championship title and did so with a hard-fought 9-8 (3) victory against Houston's Joanna Kacprzyk and Neila Starratt.

In flight one doubles' action, Klara Jagosova and Monika Hadvigerova were one win shy of collecting the title. The duo captured a 8-5 win over Nyssa Peele and Lainy Chafitz of Texas State and followed that with a 8-4 victory against Nicole Briceno and Sophie Quist of SMU.

With one away from the double's title, Jagosova and Hadvigerova were unable to collect the championship as they dropped an 8-6 decision over North Texas's Madura Ranganathan and Irina-Alexandra Paraschiv.

Daiana Negreanu and Nikola Matovivoa were another duo one win shy away from a tournament title.

In round one, Negreanu and Matovivoa handed Andrea Giraldo and Katie O'Riley of Texas State a 9-7 setback. The tandem followed the performance with an 8-3 second round win against Lucy Forward and Lynley Wasson of Houston.

 

 

Negreanu and Matovivoa suffered an 8-4 setback in the championship match against North Texas's Amy Joubert and Rachel Wilhelm.

In singles' action, sophomore Hadvigerova was on the path to capturing her second single's tournament title but dropped a 3-6, 6-1, and 6-4 hard-found decision to North Texas's Maduca Rangontathan.

Prior to the loss, Hadvigerova walked over her opponents, collecting a 6-2, 6-2 first round win over Nathalie Wallin of UTSA and a 6-4, 6-0 victory against SMU's Nicole Briceno.

Jagosova dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Giraldo of Texas State and suffered a 5-7, 7-5 and 1-0 (5) setback in the consolation bracket. In the third guaranteed game, Jagosova was handed a 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (5) setback by Houston's Lucy Forward.

In flight three singles' action, Negreanu handed Alix Young of Houston a 6-1, 6-0 loss but dropped a 3-6, 7-5, 5-4 ret. decision against North Texas's Catalina Cruz. In the consolation bracket, Negreanu suffered a setback to Andrie Meiring of Samford.

Matovivoa competed in the flight four singles' competition, where she earned a 6-3, 6-2 win against Frederique Sunstrum of Lee College but dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Rebecca Lin of Rice.

In the consolation bracket, Matovivoa suffered a 6-2, 6-2 setback from SMU's Sophie Quist.

In flight six singles' action, Manzanera handed Manami Kuroda of Lamar a 6-4, 6-4 loss but dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Stephanie Parkison of Samford. Manzanera lost her third match of the tournament by scores of 7-5, 6-3 to Micaela Silva.

Pesic collected a victory over Mackenzie Farmer of Texas State in the opening round but dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision against Emily Braid of Rice and lost a 6-2, 6-3 match to Houston's Laura Ring in the consolation bracket.

The Mavs will be back in action on Friday, October 24 where they will compete in the Regional Tournament in Forth Worth, Texas.
