Joe Batzel enters his first year as assistant track and field coach at UTA. Batzel will assist Coach White with the sprints, hurdles, jumps and relays, along with assisting in the recruiting process.
Batzel brings 27 years of coaching experience to UTA, all in the Arlington Independent School District. He has spent the last nine years as the head boys and girls track and cross country coach at Martin High School. Prior to his tenure at MHS, Batzel spent nine years as the assistant track and football coach at Lamar High School.
Throughout his tenure as a high school coach, Batzel has led his teams to eight district team championships, five in cross country and three in track and field, and eight district runner-up finishes. In his nine years as a head coach, Batzel has had a regional or state qualifier every year. All in all, he has coached over 30 regional qualifiers, six regional champions and a handful of state finalists.
Batzel graduated from UTA in 1975, and received his masters from The University of North Texas in 1980. Batzel and his wife, Mary, have one son, Dane, 25, and one daughter, Malia, 23.
