January 19, 2003
Freshman Ivorita Taylor (St. Elizabeth, Jamaica) made an impressive indoor track debut at the OU Classic in Norman, Okla., winning the 800 meters. Taylor took home the only first place finish for UTA's women's team with a time of 2:17.58, winning the race by just over three seconds.
Senior Rukaiya Holland (Houston) placed second in the long jump with a jump of 18-05.75.
Freshman Lacey Moore (Great Bend, Kan.) and Danielle Schauer (Kingwood) competed in the pole vault becoming the first UTA female athletes to compete in the pole vault since Marion Meyer in 1999. Moore place second at the OU Classic with a jump of 9-08, while Schauer was sixth with a jump of 9-01.75.
On the men's side, sophomore Paul Whitty (London, Ontario, Canada) set The University of Texas at Arlington school-record in the 60-meter hurdles by running a 7.96 to finish second at the Oklahoma Track Classic in Norman, Okla. on Saturday. Whitty's time also ties for the second fastest time in Southland Conference history.
Whitty, who set the school record at the SLC indoor meet last season at 8.04, got his 2003 season off to a good start by running a 7.99 in prelims to qualify for the finals. Once in the final, Whitty shave .03 off his time and just missed provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships by .01 (7.95). The time tied for the second fastest time in SLC history with Carl Johnson of UTSA set last year.
Freshman Adam Stafford (Merkel), running his first race as a Maverick, was not to be outdone as he finished fourth in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.20. The time ranks him in a second place tie with David Pluss on the UTA Top Performers list.
In the 200-meters, freshman Brian Allison place second with a time of 22.64, while teammates Clement Taylor and Tre' Nelson placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Taylor finished in time of 22.76 and Nelson in a time of 22.78.
In the pole vault, sophomore Levi Armstrong vaulted his way to a second place finish with a personal best jump of 15-11.00. His previous best jump was 15-07.00 set at Houston last season.
The Mavericks will return to action on Saturday, February 1 as they travel to Houston for the Houston/Run Sport All-Comers Meet.
