Track teams sweep SLC weekly awards

FRISCO, Texas - UT Arlington senior Isiah Clements has been named the Southland Conference men's track and field athlete of the week, while junior teammate DeAndrea Smith was named the conference's women's track and field athlete of the week, the league office announced Wednesday.
Clements, a San Antonio, Texas (Judson H.S.), native, won both the high jump and the 200-meter dash at the J.D. Martin Invitational, hosted by the University of Oklahoma. Clements claimed the high jump with a mark of 6-feet-9 inches, then took to the track to win the 200 meters with a time of 22.30 seconds.
Smith, also a native of San Antonio, Texas (Health Careers H.S.), won the 400 meters in 56.99 and grabbed the 200-meter gold with a time of 25.80. She went on to anchor the 1,600-meter relay, where the team placed first with a time of 3:55.16.
Honorable mention for this week's men's award goes to the McNeese State distance medley relay runners Alex Bruce-Littlewood, grad student, Jarrett LeBlanc, senior, Torian Lindsay, senior, and Joshua Sawe, grad student, UTSA junior thrower Phil Steinert and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi junior Roger De La Cruz. For the women's award, honorable mention went to UTSA sophomore distance runner Grace Williamson and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi jumper Ernestine Cray.
A student-athlete must receive 25-percent of the votes from the league's SIDs in order to qualify for honorable mention. Each school's SID nominates and votes for the athletes of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.
