BOBBY LANE INVITATIONAL KICKS OFF WITH RECORD-BREAKING POLE VAULT
March 28, 2008
ARLINGTON, Texas - - Mansfield High School junior Shade Weygandt set a new Texas High School overall pole vault record by clearing 13 feet, 91/2 inches to highlight the high school portion of the Bobby Lane Invitational on Friday at UT Arlington.
College and university athletes compete at Mavericks Stadium in the second and final day of competition on Saturday. The first event is set for 9 a.m.
Weygandt, the defending Class 5A state champion, attempted 14 feet, one-half inch but narrowly missed.
"I felt great," said Weygandt, 17, after winning the event. "I got tired after trying after so many attempts. The weather was kind of a disappointment. My goal is to clear 14 feet by the end of the season."
Weygandt's vault set a junior national outdoor record and is a Junior Olympic B qualifying mark.
