AUSTIN, Texas - For the second time in three weeks, the UT Arlington Mavericks had the important opportunity to compete at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, where the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds will be held. And once again, UTA registered numerous fine performances from both the men's and women's squads.
Leading the way again was Jeff Rodriguez, who continued his stellar season by posting another first-place finish in the pole vault. He cleared a mark of 5.32 meters on Saturday to win the event.
The other event winner for the Mavericks was Hance Loyd, who carded a time of 9:49.62 in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Another top distance performer, Emil Blomberg, placed fifth in the 3000 meters with a clocking of 8:45.19.
In addition, Isiah Clements grabbed a runner-up showing in the high jump with a clearance of 2.10 meters, which was his second best effort of the spring. Quentin Butler also had a strong day, as he had season-best marks in the 7.12 meters (6th place) and in the 100 meters with a time of 10.58.
In the women's field events, Samantha Little threw the discus 44.66 meters to place third. In addition, Sammy Nash finished fourth in the pole vault at 3.62 meters.
UTA also had third-place showings in both the 4x100 relay (LaDoreal Thompson, Shannon Reynolds, Kailey Bostic and Keondra Mallard) and the 4x400 relay (Breonna Baldwin, Wright, Kailey Bostic and Jade Vaughan).
UTA will return to action next week at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif.
