T&F: Distance runners key strong Saturday for UTA track

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The UTA track and field teams completed their stay in California with strong performances Saturday, especially in the distance events, at the VS Athletics/Beach Invitational.

Emil Blomberg, who had a UTA all-time top-five time in the steeplechase Thursday at the Mt. SAC Relays, continued his strong performance on the West Coast, winning his heat of the 1500 in a time of 3:51.62.

Blomberg edged teammate Anthony Hilliman, who also posted a season-best time of 3:53.92 in the event.

In addition, Hance Loyd established a personal record in the steeplechase with a time of 9:23.35, a full 15 seconds faster than his top time this year.

In other men's performances, Anthony Rene's 800 run of 1:52.96 was his best mark of the year, while Omar Barnes recorded the best triple jump by a UTA athlete this year (15.01m).

The women's team was very solid in the 800 meters as Lindsey Putman finished sixth in the top flight of the event with a time of 2:10.93. In addition, Ashly Wright (2:11.51), Elin Andersson (2:12.91) and Courtney Mose (2:14.24) all posted their best times of the season in the 800.

Hannah Nilsson logged her season-best 1500-meter time, running a 4:35.48 to finish third in her heat, while Breonna Baldwin won her section of the 400 meters with a clocking of 56.54.

At the Mt. SAC Relays, Emily Koenig placed 14th in her heat of the 5000 meters, carding a time of 16:57.02.

UTA will return to action next Friday and Saturday at the Track-It Buster Invitational in Wichita, Kan. It is the final event prior to the Southland Conference Championships for the Mavericks.
