QUIET DAY FOR UTA ON THE TRACK AS THE 100TH ANNUAL DRAKE RELAYS COMES TO AN END
April 25, 2009
Des Moines - One day after the men's 4X800 relay team broke a 27-year old record by a more than a second Friday, the UTA track teams had a quiet day as they combined to compete in only three events Saturday.
Junior jumper Andrew Duncan III led the way for the Mavs as he finished in 11th place in the men's high jump final with a height of 2.05m (6-08.75 ft). He tied his season best mark with this jump on Saturday. The Austin native has now successfully jumped this height three times during the spring outdoor season.
The men's 4X100 relay team that qualified second in Friday's prelims with a swift time of 40.25 ran into some problems in the final on Saturday. The team consisting of Jarid Vaughan, Cordero Gray, Bryon Majors and Takeshi Fujiwara failed to finish this race for the first time all season. UTA was among two other schools not to complete the final heat.
The Lady Mavs competed in the 1600 Sprint Medley for the first time this outdoor season and finished 15th in a large field of schools. The team of Clarissa Toomer, Megan Turner, Jasmine Walls and Caroline Erlingson turned in a time of 4:06.40. The Drake Stadium record for this event is 3:46.78 and it was set back in 1996.
Tune in to ESPN2 Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. CT to catch all the highlights from Saturday's action.
The Mavs will be back in action this Thursday as they head to Denton to take part in the UNT Invitational.
