Martin wins decathlon at SLC Championships

NATCHITOCHES, La. - Romain Martin finished what he started Friday, winning the decathlon on Day 2 of the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships.

The sophomore finished first or second in nine of 10 events. Martin won two of the events on Saturday, meaning he won five of the 10 over the two days.

Martin finished with a final score of 7556.

Ivan Storic placed second in the javelin. Martin finished fourth to give the Mavericks two scorers in the event.

The Mavericks placed two in the top four in the long jump. Lionel Mungwari finished second with a jump of 7.36 meters. Brandon Waller was just behind Mungwari with a leap of 7.18 meters.

Isiah Clements scored 5.5 more points by finishing third in the high jump with a leap of 2.05 meters.

Aaron Purser scored four more points for the Mavericks by finishing fifth in the 3000m steeplechase. He finished the event in 9:27.98.

Casey Keeter gave the Mavs a third-place finish in shot put. The senior turned in a throw of 17.44 meters. Branko Petrovic finished eighth with a throw of 15.79 meters.

Cordero Gray and Clayton Vaughn each qualified for the 100m and 200m.

For the women, Jennifer Brown scored in the long jump by placing sixth with a leap of 5.69 meters.

DeAndrea Smith qualified for the 200m and 400m.
