FRISCO, Texas -- Maria Sandstrom, who had medal finishes in a pair of distance events at the Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, has been named the SLC's Women's Newcomer of the Year, the league office announced Thursday.
The sophomore from Malmoe, Sweden (Malmoe Latin School) was the league runner up in the 5000 meters with a time of 17:25.79. In addition, she placed third in the 10000 meters (37:06.84).
Her mark in the 5000m was the fifth fastest time in school history, while her clocking in the 10000m ranks fourth in UTA history.
The annual outdoor track and field awards are voted on by the league's men's and women's head coaches and SID's and are based on the performances of the student-athletes' outdoor track and field season.
