AUSTIN, Texas - Of the seven UT Arlington athletes who competed on the first day of the NCAA West Preliminary Round, two advanced to the semifinals of their respective events.
Shannon Reynolds led the way for the Mavericks, as she placed 15th in the 100 meters with a time of 11.52. She placed third in her heat to automatically qualify. The top 12 finishers in tomorrow's semifinals will advance to the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, in two weeks.
The other UTA athlete to move on to the semis was Clayton Vaughn in the 100 meters. He will be seeded 21st in the event after his preliminary time of 10.39. A second-team All-American last year, he must finish in the top 12 tomorrow in order to have a chance to repeat that feat.
Romain Martin, who has already qualified for the NCAA Championships in the decathlon with the nation's third-best score, participated in the open javelin throw. He placed 29th with a mark of 60.33 meters (197 feet, 11 inches).
Lionel Mungwari placed 27th in the long jump with a mark of 7.42 meters (24-04.25), but he has another opportunity Friday in the triple jump. Quentin Butler, who will return to action in the 200 meters on Friday, placed 44th in the 100 with a time of 10.63.
Other competitors for the Mavericks on Friday include: Reynolds (women's 200m) and freshman Omar Barnes (men's triple jump). Live results will be available at http://www.texassports.com/livestats/c-track/.
