May 25, 2012
AUSTIN, Texas - Four men and one woman competed for the UT Arlington men's and women's track and field teams on day two of the NCAA West Preliminary Friday in Austin, Texas. UTA's day was highlighted by Shannon Reynolds, who advanced to the quarterfinals of the women's 200 meters.
Reynolds reached Saturday's quarters by virtue of a third-place finish in her heat. Her time of 23.84 was the 14th fastest among the field of 27 that will compete tomorrow for 12 spots in the NCAA Championships.
In addition, Reynolds narrowly missed out on the NCAA Championships in the 100 meters. In the quarterfinals of that event, she posted a time of 11.49 to finish 15th among the 27 runners, just .08 off a top-12 time needed to qualify for a trip to Des Moines, Iowa.
Clayton Vaughn ran a 10.51 in the semifinals of the men's 100 meters. Vaughn, who was hampered by a leg injury throughout the outdoor season, placed sixth in his heat and 23rd overall to fall short of a return trip to the NCAA Championships.
In other action, freshman Quentin Butler placed 30th in the prelims of the 200 meters with a time of 21.27. Butler missed the cut to 27 runners by just .15.
The Mavericks will complete the NCAA West Preliminary on Saturday. UTA competitors include: Reynolds (women's 200 meters), Jeff Rodriguez (men's pole vault), Isiah Clements (men's high jump) and the women's 4x100 relay team.
