June 19, 2003
ARLINGTON, Texas - For the second straight year, The University of Texas at Arlington middle distance runner Kajsa Haglund was named to the Southland Conference Women's Track All-Academic team announced on Thursday.
The all-academic team, voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators at SLC schools, honors those who have earned at least a 3.00 grade point average while serving as a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing within the institution and must have completed one full academic year there.
Haglund, a junior from Bastad, Sweden, was honored after earning a 3.88 GPA in Psychology. In her three years at UTA, Haglund has captured seven individual SLC championships and has earned 10 All-SLC selections. Earlier this season, she added her name to the SLC and UTA record books as she ran a 4:18.39 to finish second at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships, establishing a new fastest time by nearly four seconds. Haglund also owns the school and conference record in the indoor mile with a time of 4:48.34, and ranks third on the school's top performers list in the 800 meters in a time of 2:08.97.
This marks the second academic award received by Haglund this season, as last month she was named to the Verizon Academic All-District VI first team, qualifying her for the national ballot, which we be released later this month. Haglund was also honored by UTA as she was the co-recipient of the B.G. Wilson Female Athlete of the Year.
