June 19, 2012
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Four members of the UT Arlington track and field teams have been named to the 2011-12 Southland Conference Cross Country and Track and Field All-Academic Teams, the league office announced today.
The UTA recipients included three men--Hance Loyd, Lionel Mungwari and Jeff Rodriguez--and one woman--Samantha Little. Only three schools in the league had more honorees than UTA.
Loyd, a junior, owns a 3.80 grade-point average in history/pre-law and carried a perfect 4.0 GPA during the Spring 2012 semester. On the track, he placed eighth in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships in 9:25.39.
Fellow junior Mungwari sports a 3.29 GPA in accounting. At the SLC Outdoor Championships, he placed third in the long jump (7.50m) and fourth in the triple jump (15.22m). In addition, Mungwari qualified for the NCAA West Preliminaries in both events.
Rodriguez has a 3.06 GPA as a junior marketing major. He was the conference champion in the pole vault during the indoor season (5.35 meters) and set a school record in the event during the outdoor season (5.40m). Additionally, Rodriguez advanced to the NCAA West Preliminaries for the second straight year.
Little, a sophomore, carries a 3.44 grade-point average in biology. She placed third in the discus at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships with a throw of 44.52 meters.
The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/counselors from each Southland institution. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competitions to qualify for the all-academic squad.
The 2012 Southland Conference Cross Country and Track and Field All-Academic Teams are comprised of student-athletes that competed in cross country, indoor track and field and/or outdoor track and field. Student-athletes earn automatic qualification onto the Southland Conference All-Academic Team if they maintain a GPA of 3.0 in addition to earning either first-team all-conference honors in any of the three seasons and/or a CoSIDA Academic All-District Selection.
