COLLEGE PARK, Maryland - Marshall's Stephanie Cahill recorded 17 kills with only two errors and Kelly-Anne Billingly added 12 more as the Thundering Herd defeated Texas-Arlington 30-20, 30-13, 30-27 at the Courtyard by Marriott Fort Meade Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

The Thundering Herd came out in game one with Billingly collecting four early kills to push the advantage to 5-2. After falling by six, Melissa Marek recorded a kill and Morgan Rogers followed with an ace to give UTA the momentum. MU responded with a run of their own and increased its lead to 20-12 on an ace by Maggie Arias. The Mavs would get no closer the remainder of the game as MU surged ahead for the 30-20 victory.

MU (1-2) used the serving of Katie Stein to jump out to a quick 6-1 in second game. UTA responded with a pair of kills from Gina Kalb and an Ashley Van Antwerp kill to pull within one. UTA would only record seven kills in the second game to the Herd's 15 as MU outscored the Mavs 24-8 to rest of the game to take the game 30-13.

UTA (1-3) got two kills from Rogers and another by Marek to jump out to the early lead in the third game. A Van Antwerp kill and an MU service error gave UTA a 7-4 advantage. The Herd used strong offense from Cahill to surge ahead 14-9. A pair of Rogers kills, followed by a pair of Marek blocks would bring the Mavs to within one at 14-13. The Herd would again surge ahead before an Ashley Smith service ace and a Kalb kill gave the Mavs a 21-19 advantage. Cahill would take over the match as she would record five straight kills for MU in pushing ahead to 26-25. UTA would get another kill from Dacus before Christin Bimberg would end the match with two straight kills.

 

 

Rogers led the offense with eight kills, while Van Antwerp added seven and Marek six. Smith led the defense with 15 digs and Rogers added nine.

The Mavs return to action Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. CST against Maryland.
