WACO, Texas – The UT Arlington Mavericks opened play in the Baylor Classic Friday at the Ferrell Center with a 3-1 loss to Mississippi State.
With the loss, the Mavericks drop to 4-2 on the season.
"We came out and fought really well in the first and last set, but MSU played better in sets two and three and unfortunately we responded too late," UT Arlington coach Diane Seymour said. "It was good to see Shelby Dickson's numbers increase so that was good for us.
"We need to win some battles and play better defense."
Dickson finished the match leading the Mavs with 15 kills, while tallying nine digs.
The Mavericks and the Bulldogs went back-and-forth early in the first set, but MSU took an early lead. The lead didn't last long as the Mavs tied the set at 22 and took the set, 25-23.
UTA took an early lead in the second set, but MSU went on a 7-2 run and continued to push taking the set 25-17. The Bulldogs carried their momentum into the third set winning 25-18.
The Mavs grabbed the first point in the fourth set, but couldn't hold on. MSU picked up back-to-back kills to take its first lead of the set, 8-6. UTA crawled back to tie the set at 12 and continued to battle, but MSU took the set 25-20.
