Volleyball pushes No. 1 California in third set
Sept. 9, 2011
BERKELEY, Calif. - Alicia Shaffer led UT Arlington with 18 digs, but the Mavericks could not pull off the upset of No. 1 California, falling 3-0 on Friday in Berkeley, Calif.
The Mavericks dropped their first match in the Hilton Garden Inn Classic to the top-ranked Bears, 25-14, 25-9, 26-24.
UT Arlington played with the Bears throughout the third set and had them on the ropes, leading 24-22 before California (7-0) pulled away to win the final set. The Mavericks (2-7) narrowly missed becoming the first team to beat the Bears in a set this season.
The third set featured 13 ties and five lead changes.
"We were pretty pleased with our play in the first set, but not so much in the second set," UT Arlington coach Diane Seymour said. "That we turned around and responded so well in the third set is great for us. Having set-point against the No. 1 team in the nation and hanging with them in the third set as well as we did definitely bodes well for us."
"Alicia and Megan Casey did a great job for us defensively," Seymour said. "And it is not going to show too much in the box score, but we did a pretty good job blocking against some really talented big players for California."
"The play of Tara and Amanda was very, very good," Seymour said. "Both of them played extremely well."
The Mavericks return to the court Saturday for matches against Georgetown and Nevada. First serve for the UT Arlington-Georgetown match is scheduled for 1 p.m.
"I think what stood out to me was who we were personality-wise," Seymour said. "We proved we were going to work as hard as we could and take the opportunities we had in front of us. We played confident and composed and if we do that all season we will have some great moments."
