FORT WORTH, Texas - UT Arlington (4-8) could not overcome a strong service line from Texas Christian University (9-1) Tuesday night to lose 3-0 at the TCU Recreational Center.
The Horned Frogs finished with eight aces in the match, six of which came in the first set of play.
"We are going to have to receive serve better than we did tonight," UTA volleyball coach Diane Seymour said. "We have to be better than were tonight. We received serve very poorly so it's hard to stay in the match."
The Mavs opened up the match strong and led 5-3 early. The Horned Frogs would counter though with two-runs of five consecutive points and one of four to pull away from the Mavericks in the set winning 25-16. The story was from the service line as TCU scored six aces and hit .346 in the first set. UTA's Taylor Gross led all scorers in the first set with four kills.
TCU started out the second set much like how the first played out. The Horned Frogs scored 11 of the sets first 15 points and seemed in control to take the set. However, the Mavericks would battled back with five consecutive to tie the game up at 12-12. After going back and forth, UTA took a 16-15 lead on a Caitlyn Cooney ace. The Frogs took a timeout and broke the rhythm of the Mavs. TCU scored five of six and stole the set away from the Mavericks 25-22.
"I was highly disappointed in how we came out after the intermission and just laid down I think," Seymour said."
Tied 8-8 in the third set, the Horned Frogs used an 11-0, and an 6-0 run to pull away from the Mavs to close out the match. The Mavericks attempted to stall the run but could not manage to and gave up three aces in the final set.
Amy Davault led the Mavericks on offense and was one kill away from a double-double vs. the Frogs. She finished with nine kills and 10 digs in the match.
UTA begins its Western Athletic Conference schedule on Saturday against Louisiana Tech and Seymour said that the team has to work on receiving and passing from the opponents serve before the weekend arrives.
"We have to get some confidence back in that area," Seymour said. "And then are middle blockers have to be productive. We worked on it a lot last week. They did it Friday against Marist and then disappeared. They did it once so I believe they can do it again."
