DENVER, Colorado – The UT Arlington Mavericks fell in straight but close sets to Denver to move to 5-9 overall and 1-1 in the WAC.
Three straight kills from Taylor Gross put the Mavs up in the first set, 4-1. UTA never took the lead again in the set. The Pioneers found their rhythm and the floor as several kills moved them into the lead, 7-4. An ace from defensive specialist, Megan Casey kept the Mavericks in the set at 17-17. A kill from setter Amanda Welsh tied things up for the second time, 23-23. Amy Davault notched a kill and forced set one into extra points at 24-24. The Pioneers closed out the first set, 26-24.
UT Arlington opened up the second set at a familiar 4-1 lead. Three attack errors in a row turned the reins in the set over to Denver, 7-5. The Mavericks stayed in the mix but could never take control, always trailing by two or more in the middle of set two. After a block that forced a Pioneer timeout from Davault, UTA finally took a late lead, 25-24. However, three kills in a row from the same Denver attacker gave them a 2-0 over the Mavs, 27-25.
The Mavs did not start the third set with the same dominance and quickly fell to the Pioneers, 5-2. A block from Welsh and Charmaine Whitmore tied things up at 5-5, the closest UT Arlington would come to a lead in set three. Kills from several Maverick hitters kept the set close but UTA was never able to find its rhythm. Denver took the set and the match, 25-19.
Sophomore Gross led the offensive effort for the Mavericks with 16 kills and a .440 attack percentage. Shelby Dickson followed with 10 kills and notched nine digs. Davault posted an even all-around game with eight kills and digs along with two blocks. Whitmore contributed two blocks of her own and five kills. Welsh tallied 38 assists in the match while Casey had a team high two aces.
The Mavericks will conclude their trip as they take on New Mexico State Saturday, Sept. 22 at noon.
