LAS CRUCES, New Mexico – The UT Arlington Mavericks move to 1-2 in the WAC and 5-10 overall with a loss in straight sets to the Aggies of New Mexico State.

Three errors from the Mavs quickly gave New Mexico State the lead, 3-0. A kill from Charmaine Whitmore tied things up at 5-5 in the first set. Amy Davault notched a kill of her own to keep things locked at 7-7. A string of four points for the Aggies forced UTA to call a timeout, 14-11. An ace from setter Amanda Welsh brought the Mavericks within one at 15-14. The NMSU attack was unstoppable late in set one as they went on to win, 25-17.

Taylor Gross, who was uncharacteristically quiet in the first set, tied things up at 2-2 in set two with a kill. Davault gave UT Arlington its first lead with an ace, 5-4. Two big runs for the Aggies gave them a substantial 18-12 lead late in the second set. Kills from Gross, Hannah Baptiste, and Ashley Bennett kept UTA in the mix until New Mexico State earned a block and the win, 25-19.

Unforced errors for the Mavericks put them in an early 3-0 hole to start off set three. An ace from Shelby Dickson brought UT Arlington back within one at 3-2. After back and forth play, Gross knotted the third set at 11-11 with a kill. Several hitting errors late in the set pushed the Mavs to call a timeout at 19-15. A kill from Bennett kept the Aggies at bay, 23-18. New Mexico closed out the set and the match with a 25-19 victory.

Bennett and Gross led the UT Arlington attack with eight kills each. Davault followed with five kills of her own as well as ten digs. Welsh tallied 23 assists on the match while Dickson and Valerie Stetzer rounded out the defense, both with six digs.
