ARLINGTON, Texas – Volleyball opened Sun Belt Conference play with a 3-1 win over the University of Louisiana at Monroe Warhawks Friday night at College Park Center.
The Mavericks improve to 8-6 overall and 1-0 with the UT Arlington's first SBC victory.
"Opening the conference with a victory is always a nice feeling," UT Arlington coach Diane Seymour said. "One thing we talked about this week was about making sure our middles always stayed involved. They are a very good weapon for us."
The Warhawks took the lead in the first set, but Ashley Bennett picked up an ace to tie the set at 18. ULM was able to pull ahead again taking set one 25-21.
Both teams battled early in the second set as the score went back-and-forth, but UTA was able to gain the lead at won the second set 25-21.
"The first two sets were not pretty volleyball whether we won or lost," Seymour said. "We talked during the intermission that we had to eliminate the service errors and we did that and they did not."
The teams headed into the third set tied 1-1. The Warhawks led for most of the set, but the Mavericks were relentless. UTA took the set 27-25 with four kills for Whitmore and Dickson.
The final set was close early, but the Mavericks pulled ahead with a 25-15 win to take the match.
The Mavericks are back in action Saturday night as they host University of Louisiana at Lafayette at 7 p.m. at College Park Center.
