ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington fell in straight sets, 25-14, 25-22, and 27-25 to Utah State today at College Park Center. The loss moves the Mavs to 6-11 overall and 2-3 in WAC competition.
An early ace for Utah State puts them in the lead in set one, 2-0. The Mavericks struggled to find a rhythm on defense as the Aggies went up, 7-3. Amy Davault earned the first kill for UT Arlington to put them down four, 10-6. Utah State forced a Mav timeout at 13-6. Charmaine Whitmore came out firing with a kill from Amanda Welsh to close the gap, 13-7. The Aggies put together a run at the serving line to extend their lead to 18-9. Shelby Dickson threaded a kill through the block, 19-11. Ashley Bennett and Dickson followed that up with a big stop at the net to put the Mavericks down seven, 19-12. Karli Nanny off the bench tallies a kill, 23-13. Utah State takes the first set to go up 1-0, 25-14 against UTA.
Dickson starts things off with a kill in the second set, 1-0. Gross earns her first kill of the match off the Aggie block to put the Mavs up at 2-1. Davault ran down a stray ball to keep a long rally alive for UT Arlington before Welsh and Whitmore sealed the point with a block, 6-4. Utah State tied things up at 8-8 in set two after a Maverick hitting error. The Aggies took the lead for the first time in the set with a kill at 12-11. Utah State put together another solid run from the serving line to push their lead to 18-13. Hannah Baptiste earns a kill to close the gap to one, 18-17. Bennett slices a kill down the line to keep the Mavs in it mix in set two at 21-19. Dickson ties things up with a kill, 22-22. The Aggies take the second set, 25-22 to put them up 2-0 on UTA.
Dickson puts the Mavericks on the board with a kill, 2-1 in favor of the Aggies. A 5-1 Utah State lead causes UTA to call an early timeout in the third set. Gross knocks a kill down the line to cut the lead to two at 7-5. Unforced errors from the Mavs extended Utah State’s lead to four, 12-8. An Aggie kill forced UT Arlington to call another timeout at 16-10 in the third set. A block and a kill from Gross kept the Mavericks in the match at 17-13. Whitmore and Welsh earn a stop at the net and cut the Aggie lead to three, 18-15. Strong serves from Utah State pushed them a 22-16 lead late in set three. The Mavs fought back to force a visitor timeout at 24-22. UTA continues to push to 24-24 in the third set. Utah State closes out the set and the match with a 27-25 victory.
“We got off to a slow start in serve receive and weren’t able to get in sync until the second set,” UTA head coach Diane Seymour said. “That gives the other team a lot of confidence when you aren’t firing on all cylinders early on in the match.”
Gross and Davault lead the offense for the Mavericks with eight kills each against the Aggies. Dickson followed with six of her own and eight digs. Valerie Stetzer had a team high nine digs while Bennett had four blocks to lead the team, all assisted. Welsh rounded things out for the Mavs with 29 assists.
“We need to keep fighting no matter what, no matter how big the other team may be,” both Welsh and Dickson agreed.
UT Arlington will travel to San Marcos, Texas next week to face Texas State at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4 before taking on UTSA in San Antonio on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 2:00 p.m.
