SAN MARCOS, Texas – UT Arlington fell to the Bobcats of Texas State on Thursday night. The loss moves the Mavericks to 6-12 on the season and 2-4 in WAC play.
A solid string of serves from Texas State put them at an early 4-0 lead in set one. Taylor Gross got things going offensively for the Mavericks with a kill to cut the lead to two, 4-2. Shelby Dickson notched a hard cross-court kill to put UTA down 11-8. A Bobcat kill forced the Mavs to call a timeout at 15-9
Ashley Bennett and Gross earned a block and the point to cut the Texas State lead down to four, 15-11. The Mavericks gained some ground behind the serve of Chelsea Rekieta to put them down two at 16-14. A run from the Bobcat serving line caused another UT Arlington timeout at 21-16. A kill from Bennett fought off set point for Texas State, 24-18 but the Bobcats would close out the match the next rally, 25-18.
Once again, the Mavs found themselves in an early hole at 3-0 to start the second set. Gross tapped a kill off the Bobcat block to keep UTA in the mix at 4-2. A series of kills from Texas State attackers extended their lead, 8-3 before Amy Davault earned one of her own, 8-4. The Mavericks were forced to call their first timeout of set two while down five, 12-7.
UT Arlington struggled to find momentum after the hot start for Texas State and was quickly down 19-10. Davault tagged a kill through the block to close the gap, 21-12. A stop at the net from Hannah Baptiste and Welsh put the Mavs down 22-13 late in the second set. The Bobcats closed out the set, 25-14 to go up 2-0.
Bennett earned a block to start things off in the third set and gave the Mavs their first lead of the match, 1-0. Another stop by Bennett and Gross extended UTA’s lead to three at 4-1. The Mavericks kept things rolling behind the serve of Davault and caused Texas State to take a timeout, 8-4. After several short plays at the net, Welsh shot one over for a kill to go up by six at 13-7.
Dickson extended the gap for UT Arlington from the serving line for the Mavs largest lead of the night, 18-10. Rekieta followed her up with tough serving of her own and an ace to pull within five of set point at 20-11. Dickson powered a kill into Bobcat court to take the third set, 25-18.
A kill from Bennett gave the Mavs the lead in set four, 4-3. Texas State regained the lead at 6-5 with a block. An ace from the Bobcats caused UT Arlington to call a timeout down 11-6 in the fourth set. Davault tapped a kill off the block to climb back within six, 14-8. Dickson notched her seventh kill of the match to close the Texas State gap at 17-11. UTA dropped the point in a long rally to go down by eight, 20-12. The Bobcats momentum could not be stopped as they took the fourth set and the match, 25-15.
Valerie Stetzer, the libero for this match, led the Mavericks in digs with 18 and Dickson followed with 13 as well as seven kills. Welsh notched 33 assists on the night. Offensively, Gross and Davault were large contributors with six and ten kills, respectively. Bennett, however, led the way for UT Arlington with 11 kills, a .476 attack percentage, and had a hand in five of the team’s seven blocks.
“Whenever some of your teammates are not having a good night you really need someone to step up to take the pressure off them and that was really on my mind tonight,” UTA sophomore middle blocker Ashley Bennett said.
The Mavericks will have a quick turnaround before taking on UTSA in San Antonio on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 2:00 p.m.
“We need to get off to a quicker start on Saturday,” UTA head coach Diane Seymour said. “If we do that then that then they are the ones that will be on their heels and hopefully we learned that lesson tonight.”
