ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington picked up its third Sun Belt Conference sweep of the season after defeating South Alabama 3-0 at College Park Center Friday night.
"I think we're a little bit more determined to stay at the top the Sun Belt standings," UT Arlington coach Diane Seymour said. "This win was very big after dropping two last week. We were a little timid early on, but I think that's passed us now."
"I can out jump people," Whitmore said. "I just made sure I could get up for (Amanda) Welsh making sure I got over the block and not hit into it."
Both teams came out fighting hard from the beginning, but UTA was able to take the lead and continue to lead throughout the set. Ashley Bennett, Whitmore and Koch each racked up three kills in the first set as the Mavericks won 25-21.
UT Arlington (12-9, 5-3 SBC) continued its momentum into the second set getting off to an early lead. Hannah Baptiste put up a kill that stunned the Jaguars and gave UTA a 19-10 lead. South Alabama pushed back, but it wasn’t enough as the Mavs won the second set 25-16.
South Alabama knew it had to win the third set to stay in the match and they played like it picking up 18 kills. UTA stayed in the set and was able to pull ahead winning the set, 25-22, at the match.
The Mavericks are back on the court Sunday at noon at College Park Center as they host Troy.
