LOGAN, Utah – UT Arlington falls to 4-8 in the WAC and 8-16 overall with a three-set loss at Utah State, 23-25, 25-27 and 18-25.
The Mavericks and Aggies both fought a tight set one tonight with 10 different tied scores throughout the match. UTA kept things close but were unable to pull out a win as Utah State took the first set 25-23. Amy Davault led the offense with four kills while Amanda Welsh tallied nine assists. Shelby Dickson and Chelsea Rekieta both had three digs in set one, and Charmaine Whitmore rounded out the defense with four blocks, all assisted.
UT Arlington quickly fell behind 4-1 at the opening of the second set. Kills from Taylor Gross kept the Mavs in the mix and pulled them within two at 7-5. UTA struggled to find their rhythm mid-set as no Maverick could string together more than one serve each. After a UT Arlington timeout down 19-11, the Aggies let the Mavericks back in with a series of errors. A block from Gross and Whitmore at 25-25 would be the Mavs final point of the set as Utah State went up 2-0, 27-25.
Once again, the Mavericks found themselves down 4-1 in set three. A block from Gross and Ashley Bennett stopped the Aggie run at 8-5. Three points would be the closest UTA would come to tying Utah State in the third set. The Mavs would fall 25-18 to drop the final set and match on the road.
UTA’s offense in the loss was led by Dickson as she tallied nine kills while Stacey Koch was the most effective Maverick hitter with a .600 attack percentage. Welsh notched 22 assists on the night, while liber Valerie Stetzer had a team-high eight digs. Whitmore had a hand in the team’s 11 blocks with seven of her own, all assisted.
The Mavericks have a quick turnaround after the loss as they travel to San Jose, California to take on San Jose State on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 7:00 p.m.
