ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington fell in five sets, 3-2, to Georgia State Friday night at College Park Center.
The Mavericks dropped to 15-11 overall and 8-5 in the Sun Belt Conference after the loss.
"They wanted it more than us," UT Arlington coach Diane Seymour said. "That's the bottom line. They came out and wanted to win."
Shelby Dickson tallied her 11th double-double of the season with 22 digs and 13 kills. Charmaine Whitmore picked up her second double-double of the season with 10 kills and 11 total blocks. Taylor Gross and Stacey Koch also picked up double figure kills with 12 and 11 respectively.
Georgia State started the match strong with a 5-1 run. UT Arlington came back and tied it up after a GSU attacking error. The Mavericks pulled ahead with a 20-17 lead, but the Panthers came back to win the first set 27-25.
After falling in the first set, the Mavericks took an early 5-1 lead in set two. GSU went on a 7-0 run, closing the gap to 17-14, but UTA would make another push, winning the set 25-18.
UTA scored the first six points of the third set before allowing a Panther point. The Mavericks reached a 10-point lead with a kill from Gross to extend their lead, 22-12. Koch grabbed her seventh kill of the night to give the Mavs the 25-15 win.
After another 5-1 start, the Mavericks gave up their lead and fell 25-22 in the fourth set. The Mavericks let GSU tie the fifth set, 6-6, after miscommunication on the floor. GSU continued to push winning the set 15-11 and the match 3-2.
The Mavericks are back in action Saturday as they host Western Kentucky at 3 p.m. at College Park Center for their final home match of the season.
