VB: Texas State Outlasts Mavs in Five

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Despite double-doubles from Qiana Canete and Kylie Jedlicka, Texas State outlasted UTA volleyball in five sets (28-26, 25-17, 8-25, 21-25, 11-15) on Monday night at College Park Center.

UTA (12-15, 6-8 Sun Belt Conference) suffered a tough five-set loss to red-hot Texas State (21-8, 12-2 Sun Belt). The Mavs opened strong with a pair of tight wins in the first two sets and after a dominating win in the third from Texas State, the Mavs fell just short of winning a decisive fifth set.

Despite the loss, the Mavs have clinched a berth in the Sun Belt Conference Championships, set for Nov. 16-19 in Jonesoboro, Ark.

Canete, the UTA career record holder in kills, turned in another all-around effort to lead the Mavs. The senior out of Copperas Cove, Texas, finished with her 17th double-double of the year, owning 21 kills and 15 digs, adding five blocks and a staggering 24.5 total points.

UTA also got the fifth double-double of the year from Jedlicka, who set a new career high with 18 digs, adding 18 kills. Senior Zhanelle Geathers finished with nine kills and eight digs, with sophomore Madison McConnell charting four kills, three digs and a career-high six blocks. Freshman Tessa Harfield added four blocks, libero Madison Smith charted 11 digs and setter Haley Higgins finished with three kills and a team-leading 43 assists.



The Mavs return to action on Friday, hosting ULM at 6:30 p.m. CT at College Park Center.

The Mavs came out of the gate slow as Texas State took a 4-2 lead. The Mavs fought back to even it at six, seven, nine, 10 and 11 before embarking on its first extended run. After a Jedlicka kill cut it to 12-11, the Mavs fought back to get to 18-17. Jedlicka evened it up with a kill at 19-19 and Geathers followed to give UTA its first lead since 2-1 at 20-19. The Mavs then traded blows with the Bobcats, earning set point at 25-24 and again finishing it at 27-26 for a 28-26 win.

UTA came out strong in the second, taking a 2-0 lead before the Bobcats got on the board. Jedlicka gave UTA a 4-2 lead with the Mavs holding off TXST for a 10-5 lead following an ace from McConnell, prompting a Bobcat timeout. Canete stretched the lead to 12-7 and the Mavs used a kill from Jedlicka for a 15-10 lead. Geathers' ace put the Mavs up 17-10 and prompted a timeout, with UTA stretching its lead to 22-14 behind a block from McConnell and Higgins. UTA then finished off the win with a 25-17 score.

The teams traded points to open but Texas State rallied to take a 10-3 lead and force a UTA timeout. The Bobcats then used an 8-0 run to build a 20-7 lead, eventually cruising to a 20-8 win.

The Bobcats opened up strong in the fourth, taking a 5-1 lead. UTA was able to cut it to six on a kill from Jedlicka and got back-to-back points, including a kill from Higgins and an ace from Geathers to cut it to 10-5. UTA went on a 4-0 run to cut the Bobcats lead to 13-9 and force a TXST timeout. UTA got a kill from Canete out of the break and the Mavs were able to cut it to 16-14. A 4-0 run, including two kills from Canete and kills from Higgins and Jedlicka spurred the Mavs to cut the lead to 21-20 but the Bobcats notched four of the final five points for the win.

The final stanza opened with each team trading points, with UTA falling behind as the Bobcats notched three of the first four. Back-to-back points from the Mavs evened it up at five but the Bobcats used 10 of the final 16 points to post the deciding win.
