SEATTLE, Washington - UT Arlington dropped a five set battle to the Redhawks of Seattle. The Mavericks move to 8-20 on the season and 4-12 in the WAC with the loss.
The Mavs jumped off to a hot start in the match, only giving up the lead once in the first set. After a Seattle service error to tie the set 6-6, Stacey Koch knocked down a kill to put UTA on top, 7-6. The Mavericks dominated the remainder of the first set from the serving line to go up 1-0 with a 25-17 win.
UT Arlington found themselves up quickly 3-0 in the second set after kills from both Shelby Dickson and Amanda Welsh, and a Redhawk attack error. Things were once again tied at 6-6 but back-to-back aces from Taylor Gross would put the Mavs up by two, 8-6. Seattle threatened the UTA lead mid-set but a kill from Charmaine Whitmore would give the Mavericks a 15-13 lead. Strong serving from Gross and Megan Casey would close out the second set 25-15 and give the Mavs a 2-0 lead.
Both teams exchanged points the majority of the third set which resulted in a 17-17 tie. Two Maverick errors gave Seattle a small lead late in the set, 19-17. After a UTA timeout, the Redhawks put together a strong run of serves to extend their lead to five, 22-17. They would eventually close out the third set, 25-19, to force a fourth.
UT Arlington struggled from the serving line in the fourth set, with no Maverick able to string together more than three serves at a time. This caused the Mavs to find themselves in a nine point hole to give Seattle their largest lead of the night at 19-10. Back-to-back kills from Karli Nanny kept UTA in the set but the Redhawk lead was just too large to overcome as they took the fourth set, 25-13.
The Mavericks started out the deciding fifth set strong with a 3-0 lead. Seattle was able to chip away at the lead to come within one, 8-7, but Dickson and Nanny both put away kills to give UTA a three point lead at 10-7. A kill from Amanda Welsh forced a Redhawk timeout at 12-9. Seattle came out firing and quickly came to match point at 14-12. A Redhawk attack error tied the fifth set at 14-14 to force extra points. Seattle would close out the set and match with an ace, 17-15.
Dickson earned her twelfth double-double of the season with 14 kills and 16 digs. Welsh tallied a team-high 32 assists while Davault notched 20 digs on the match. Whitmore contributed four blocks, all assisted, to the team's seven total. Gross led from the serving line with two aces in the loss.
UT Arlington will travel to Idaho to take on Vandals on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 9:00 p.m. to close out their final regular-season WAC road trip.
