SAN ANTONIO, Tex. - Eld-hah Kaswatuka led three UT Arlington players in double figures with 12 kills but the Mavericks fell 3-1 at UTSA on Saturday to close the regular season.
The 26-24, 17-25, 18-25, 16-25 defeat means the Mavericks enter the Southland Conference Tournament as the No. 6 seed. They will play Sam Houston State in the first round.
UT Arlington (12-18, 8-8) started hot, hitting .552 in the first set on its way to a 26-24 victory.
However, the Mavericks were unable to keep up the offensive pace. They finished the match hitting just .132 after the quick start.
"I thought after the first set UTSA began to play better and we were not quite as aggressive," UT Arlington coach Diane Seymour said. "We got a little bit timid and I thought that showed."
Kaswatuka had eight blocks to go along with her 12 kills.
Amanda Welsh dished out 34 assists and also tallied eight digs.
Elise Huskey led the Roadrunners (20-10, 14-2) with 20 kills. Kelsey Schwirtlich had 43 assists, nine digs and four blocks.
Despite the four-set loss, Seymour took the early success as a positive.
"The first time we played UTSA it wasn't even close," Seymour said. "At least this time we played them well through half the match. We have to take something positive out of it. Now we have to set our goals on playing them again.
"We have played well in the last two-to-three weeks. Our mission is to win match 1 in the Southland Conference Tournament and play UTSA again and let the chips fall where they may."
UT Arlington will meet Sam Houston State in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament on Friday in Conway, Ark.
